ChatGPT Usage: Weekday Dominance Suggests Professional Use

Recent data analysis reveals a clear usage pattern for ChatGPT: Weekday usage significantly surpasses weekend usage. This trend supports the assumption that the AI chatbot is primarily used for professional and academic purposes. Compared to platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), ChatGPT continues to experience strong growth.

ChatGPT Among the Most Visited Websites Worldwide

ChatGPT is now among the most visited websites globally. According to Similarweb, the AI service recorded a total of 4.786 billion visits in April 2025, positioning itself significantly ahead of X (formerly Twitter) with 4.028 billion visits during the same period. If this trend continues, ChatGPT could soon climb into the top 5 most visited websites worldwide.

The figures illustrate the rapid growth of ChatGPT, particularly in recent months. At the beginning of 2025, the service couldn't overtake X on any given day. The first overlaps appeared in February. In March, ChatGPT lagged behind X only on weekends, and in April, the gap narrowed almost completely.

Instagram.com continues to maintain a slight lead over ChatGPT; on April 28th, less than 13 million visits separated the two platforms, according to Similarweb. However, since Instagram generates a large portion of its traffic via mobile devices, the gap is likely larger on smartphones.

Weekday Usage 50 Percent Higher Than on Weekends

An analysis of weekly usage figures shows that ChatGPT receives most of its traffic on weekdays. According to Similarweb, weekday usage is about 50 percent higher than on weekends. This decline in activity on Saturdays and Sundays suggests that ChatGPT is primarily used for professional work, studies, research, writing, and other productive tasks.

The technical side also reflects this pattern. Artificial Analysis notes that OpenAI's API speed increases on weekends when fewer users are online. With less traffic, requests are processed faster, and response times decrease.

ChatGPT Leads the AI Market – With a Loyal User Base

Compared to other generative AI platforms, ChatGPT stands out both for its total number of users and a loyal user base, according to Similarweb. Most ChatGPT users do not use other AI tools.

Users of Claude, on the other hand, are more likely to experiment and use multiple AI services simultaneously. Nearly 86 percent of Claude users also use ChatGPT.

Perplexity shows a similar trend: 74 percent of Perplexity users also use ChatGPT, which offers similar or even expanded features like ChatGPT Search and Deep Research. However, the overlap is mostly one-sided – only about four percent of ChatGPT users also use Perplexity.

Google Gemini Catches Up, But Remains Behind ChatGPT

Since the release of the Grok iOS app, Grok and Google's Gemini have been in a neck-and-neck race for market share on the iPhone. Gemini has gained momentum recently but still lags behind ChatGPT in both overall usage and user loyalty. These figures reflect iPhone usage in the US; Gemini is likely to perform more strongly on Android devices, where Google controls the ecosystem.

Similarweb data shows that both Grok and Gemini experienced daily user growth, with Gemini achieving larger gains towards the end of the observed period (February to April 2025). However, this has not changed ChatGPT's dominant position.
