The AI used for Darth Vader's voice is based on Google Gemini 2.0 and ElevenLabs' Flash v2.5, to simulate the voice of the late James Earl Jones. Despite safety precautions from Google and additional restrictions by Epic Games, players managed to manipulate the AI. Epic Games responded quickly with a hotfix and assured that such incidents should not happen again in the future.
The company explained that the filters had not recognized a particular expression and adjustments were made to prevent similar responses. Additionally, specific rules and instructions were implemented to prevent swearing and the repetition of swear words. Should a player continue to try to provoke Darth Vader into making inappropriate statements, the AI will leave the player's group and cannot be recruited again in that game session.
The incident with Darth Vader in Fortnite highlights the challenges of moderating AI-generated content in online games, especially with a large and young player base. The speed with which players managed to manipulate the AI raises questions about the readiness of generative AI on large platforms.
In some cases, Darth Vader's problematic statements were subtle and difficult for the AI to detect. Examples include the devaluation of the Spanish language or the categorization of colors in a player-specified order. These examples show that AI systems still struggle to fully grasp the context and implications of language.
Epic Games emphasized that the security measures and restrictions were tested by employees and external experts. The company assured that reports will be investigated and adjustments made where necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future. However, the incident underscores the need for continuous research and development in the field of AI safety and ethics.
Besides the controversy surrounding Darth Vader, there were other developments at Fortnite. Epic Games announced that Apple has blocked the release of Fortnite in the US App Store and the Epic Games Store for iOS in the European Union. This is the continuation of a protracted legal battle between the two companies over in-app purchases and fees.
