The digitalization of the job market brings many advantages, but also new challenges. An increasing problem is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to manipulate application processes. From optimized cover letters to deepfake interviews: AI-supported fraud is becoming increasingly sophisticated and presents new difficulties for both companies and applicants.
AI tools enable fraudsters to create deceptively real online profiles. Resumes, application photos, even entire websites and LinkedIn profiles can be generated using AI, painting a flawless, yet entirely fabricated picture of a candidate. Remote positions, where personal interaction in the application process is often reduced, are particularly targeted.
Deepfake technology, which creates realistic, AI-generated videos of people, is now also entering the world of recruiting. Cases in which applicants use AI filters to conceal their true identity are increasing. This makes it difficult for HR managers to verify the authenticity of applicants and increases the risk of falling for scams.
The consequences of this digital fraud are manifold. For honest applicants, the chances of fair competition decrease, as they have to compete with manipulated profiles and deepfakes. Companies, in turn, are at risk of hiring fraudsters who – once inside the company – could steal sensitive data or install malware. Experts predict that the proportion of fake applications will continue to rise in the coming years.
To counteract AI fraud, companies are adapting their recruitment processes. For example, some companies are increasingly relying on in-person interviews to verify the identity of applicants. The development of new technologies to detect deepfakes and fake profiles is also gaining importance.
The increasing use of AI in recruiting is just one aspect of the changing job market. Phenomena such as ghosting of applicants and ghost jobs add to the complexity of the situation. The ongoing digitalization requires adaptability and a growing awareness of the new challenges and risks from both companies and applicants.
Developments in the field of AI-supported application manipulation remain dynamic. It is to be expected that both the methods of fraudsters and the countermeasures of companies will be further developed. Continuous exchange between experts, companies, and applicants is essential to jointly find solutions for a secure and fair application process.
