The fusion of artificial intelligence and creative toys reaches a new dimension: Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have developed an AI chatbot called LegoGPT that generates complex building instructions for Lego models from simple text input. This innovative tool opens up undreamt-of possibilities for both experienced builders and Lego novices.
LegoGPT's functionality is remarkably simple: Users enter a textual description of their desired model, for example, "a classical guitar" or "a rustic stone bench with moss". The chatbot processes this input and then creates detailed building instructions that explain the construction of the Lego model step by step. LegoGPT considers not only the shape of the desired object but also additional instructions regarding colors and specific shapes.
The generated building instructions are designed to be implemented with commercially available Lego bricks. The researchers demonstrated the versatility of the system by having the instructions created by LegoGPT recreated both manually and with the help of robotic arms.
LegoGPT is based on the large language model (LLM) Llama 3.2 Instruct 1B from Meta and additionally uses GPT-4o from OpenAI to generate the precise geometric descriptions. The chatbot's training was based on a comprehensive dataset comprising over 47,000 Lego structures, 28,000 3D objects, detailed image captions, as well as specially developed code and models. The training process considered 21 object categories, including benches, bookshelves, cars, chairs, and guitars.
The developers placed particular emphasis on the stability of the generated Lego models. LegoGPT checks the stability of the construction after each virtual building step. If a part of the structure is detected as unstable, the design is automatically adjusted and optimized. This iterative process ensures that the final building instructions lead to robust and realizable models.
The dataset (StableText2Lego) and the associated code are publicly available on Github. Interested parties can test LegoGPT themselves via a demo version. Due to high demand, there may currently be waiting times until the building instructions are generated.
LegoGPT illustrates the immense potential of AI in the creative field. The technology makes it possible to simplify complex design processes and opens up new ways to translate imagination into reality. Future developments could further expand the functionality of LegoGPT and, for example, enable the integration of augmented reality or the consideration of individual Lego collections.
