The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping our everyday lives and awakens both hopes and fears. Especially the younger generation, the so-called Generation Z (born after 1997), faces this technology with a mixture of fascination and skepticism. A current study sheds light on Gen Z's perception and expectations regarding AI and reveals a surprising picture.
A study conducted by Edubirdie among 2,000 young people revealed that a quarter of Gen Z is already convinced that AI has developed its own consciousness. More than half of the respondents assume that this will be the case in the near future. This assessment partly coincides with the prognoses of some experts, who do not entirely rule out the possibility of AI consciousness. The question of whether machines can actually think and feel, however, remains the subject of intense debates in science and philosophy.
The idea of a world dominated by AI does not seem to be an unrealistic scenario for Gen Z. 58 percent of respondents believe that Artificial Intelligence will sooner or later take over world domination. 44 percent even expect this to happen within the next 20 years. This vision of the future reflects the widespread uncertainty about the long-term effects of AI development.
Gen Z's relationship with AI chatbots like ChatGPT is characterized by a striking politeness. 69 percent of respondents state that they consistently use "please" and "thank you" when communicating with chatbots. Similar results are shown by studies from other countries. While some interpret this behavior as an expression of respect for the technology, others suspect the fear of the potential consequences of AI dominance behind it. Twelve percent of respondents in a separate study stated that they are polite to chatbots in order to "get on their good side" in the event of an AI takeover.
The politeness of users towards ChatGPT has a concrete financial aspect for OpenAI, the company behind the technology. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, explained that processing the polite phrases costs the company millions of dollars. Nevertheless, Altman considers this investment worthwhile, as the long-term effects of AI development cannot be estimated. The statement reflects the general uncertainty and the different scenarios associated with the advancement of AI.
At the beginning of 2025, Sam Altman announced that OpenAI now knows how to develop a so-called "superintelligence" (AGI). However, what exactly is meant by AGI and whether this form of AI will have its own consciousness remains controversial. The announcement underlines the rapid development in the field of AI and at the same time raises fundamental questions about the limits and possible consequences of this technology.
As a German AI company, Mindverse offers innovative solutions for the creation and processing of texts, images, and other content. From chatbots and voicebots to AI search engines and knowledge systems, Mindverse develops customized AI applications for companies and organizations. In the context of the presented study, it becomes clear how important it is to shape the development and use of AI responsibly and ethically.
