Artificial intelligence (AI) is significantly shaping smartphone development. But what innovations await us in 2025 beyond AI? This article illuminates trends that go beyond the AI hype and define the next generation of smartphones.
The heart of every smartphone is the processor, the so-called System-on-a-Chip (SoC). New processors like the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite and the Mediatek Dimensity 9400 promise performance leaps, especially for AI applications directly on the device. Benchmarks show that they compete with Apple's A18 Pro, which strengthens the on-device AI capabilities of Android smartphones.
AI integration in smartphones is progressing. Google and Apple are expanding their operating systems with generative AI functions. Android 16 is supposed to enable comprehensive voice control with Gemini, while iOS 19 turns Siri into a full-fledged chatbot. This promises more intuitive smartphone interaction.
AI calculations are energy-intensive. To ensure battery life, manufacturers are relying on batteries with silicon-carbon cell chemistry. This technology offers higher energy density than lithium-ion batteries, thus enabling larger capacities with the same size. Smartphones with 6,000 mAh batteries are announced, 7,000 mAh could follow. Apple is also allegedly planning new cell chemistry in the iPhone 17 with faster charging processes.
The new battery technology allows for slimmer smartphones. Apple and Samsung are reportedly planning particularly thin models without sacrificing runtime. At the same time, manufacturers are working on smaller camera bumps. Oppo shows with the Find X8 Pro how a new periscope telephoto zoom design reduces the camera bump.
Bluetooth 6.0, the successor to Bluetooth 5.4, is expected to be introduced in smartphones in 2025. It promises more precise "Find My" functions and enhanced digital key solutions. The IP69 protection class protects smartphones from high-pressure water jets and makes them showerproof.
From mid-2025, manufacturers in the EU must provide smartphones with software updates for five years. This extends the lifespan and reduces electronic waste. Samsung and Google already meet these requirements.
